“Dylan’s your ex?” Isaac laughed. “Wow. I don’t see it.”

“What?” Mitch asked, cradling his glass in his hands as he lay on his side on the bed, propped up on his elbow. He wasn’t entirely sure how agreeing to stay for a drink and looking through some of Isaac’s designs in his portfolio had turned to discussing Dylan and exes in general.

“The two of you. I mean he’s so… and you’re… not.” Isaac sipped his drink, then shifted slightly. He was lying beside Mitch, mirroring Mitch’s pose as he rested on one arm, his legs hanging over the end of the bed. “No offense,” he added.

Mitch snorted a laugh. “It was a long time ago. When he had regular access to a hairdresser and owned a suit.” Dylan had changed a lot since they had dated briefly. He always had been a free spirit locked inside a businessman, and it was kind of nice to see him finally be free, to soar.

Isaac smiled. “It must be weird seeing him again.”

Shrugging, Mitch said, “It’s not as weird as I thought it would be. We’ve both grown up a lot since then. He’s happy and I’m…” Happy, too? Was he happy? “And I’m okay.”

With a nod, Isaac asked, “So there’s no one else, no one special back in Miami?”

Mitch swallowed more of the bitter whiskey and licked his lips. He met Isaac’s eyes. Was Isaac fishing? “Since Dylan, the only long-term relationship I’ve had is with my cleaner.” He looked away and slid his glass onto the nightstand. “Her name is Esther, and she collects pig ornaments.”

“Pigs? Really? My mom collects frogs. They’re everywhere. In the house, in the garden, every room. Go to the bathroom, and they’re there, staring at you with their beady little frog eyes.” He sighed and rested his head in his hand. He looked tired, drunk.

“Give me that,” Mitch said and took Isaac’s glass from him. He placed it on the table beside his. When he turned back, he was surprised to find Isaac had moved closer, crowding his space as he teased his gaze over Mitch’s face until he settled his attention on Mitch’s mouth.

“Did you know that I…” Isaac paused and rested his hand on Mitch’s arm. “I have a degree in business?”

Mitch couldn’t help but smile. Isaac wasn’t what he’d expected. Being told the ex-model son of the company boss was overseeing things hadn’t exactly been the news Mitch wanted to hear when Jerry had told him. Yes, Mitch was good at his job. He was good with order, the definite parts of life, the small print. He wasn’t artistic, didn’t know anything about colors or framing a shot, and his creative flair only went as far as working a contract in his favor. Jerry had laid the groundwork, but Mitch for once had felt like he wasn’t going to be able to fill the cavernous boots Jerry had left for him.

“I didn’t know that.”

“Uh-huh. Not just a pretty face.” Isaac leaned forward and rested his hand on Mitch’s chest.
